AI Policy
The use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in writing for ToMS
The use of technology should be under human supervision and control, and all work should be carefully reviewed and edited. Authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the content of the work.
Authors should disclose the use of generative AI and AI-enabled technologies in their manuscript; a notice will appear in the published paper.
Authorship entails responsibilities and tasks that can only be attributed to and performed by humans.
Forbidden actions:
- substituting important authorial tasks, such as developing scientific knowledge, drawing scientific conclusions, etc,
- the use of previously published material,
- listing generative AI and AI-supported technologies as author or co-author or naming AI as author.
Permitted measures:
- improving the readability and language of the paper.
The use of generative AI and AI-supported tools in figures, images and artworks
Prohibited:
- the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or modify images in submitted manuscripts,
- the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools in the creation of artworks.
Permitted are:
- adjustments to brightness, contrast, or colour balance if it does not obscure or eliminate any information present in the original,
- if they are part of the research design or research methods (e.g. in AI-supported imaging processes).
